How can Occupational Therapy support housing adaptations?
As part of a housing and environmental assessment, I can:
Complete an initial consultation to establish the person's needs and determine whether an Occupational Therapy housing assessment is appropriate.
Complete a comprehensive functional and environmental assessment within the home.
Assess the suitability of proposed adaptations, taking account of mobility, transfers, balance, cognition, fatigue and ability to complete everyday activities.
Assess suitability for stairlifts and other access solutions, considering both physical and cognitive ability to use the equipment safely.
Assess the clinical and functional need for ground-floor adaptations, including accessible toilet, showering and bedroom facilities where appropriate.
Provide Occupational Therapy reports and recommendations to support Housing Adaptation Grant applications, where the proposed adaptation is clinically indicated.
Provide recommendations regarding accessible entrances, bathrooms, internal circulation, wheelchair accessibility, grab rails and other environmental modifications.
Liaise, where appropriate, with clients, families, contractors, architects and other professionals to support the translation of Occupational Therapy recommendations into practical adaptations.
Provide accessibility recommendations for new-build or proposed home designs, informed by the individual's current and anticipated functional needs.
